Why Quality is Important for Tools Designed for Professional Use

One of the thing I found is that most store owners or sellers are not consumers of the productsthey sell. This is especially true with multicultural products. Because of the unfamiliarity that may be present, it is important to know the facts, individual qualities, similarities and differences of the products.

You also have to understand that the professional cosmetologist‘s need  for quality products is much more important than the usual consumer who buys for personal or one time use only on themselves or their family. By way of example, a certain pressing comb may sell for $5 and another one that at first glance looks identical may sell for twice the price. A closer inspection will reveal that the higher priced comb is much heavier, wider and balanced. This translates to mean that the higher priced iron is more conductive for everyday professional use because it can withstand prolonged use for a much longer time and holds heat better and longer. The extra size and weight will make the job easier and faster and the balance will make it more comfortable to use even though it is heavier. The cheaper comb may be brass plated over cheap scrap metal. The better comb is solid brass and will hold heat longer and will have even distribution of heat throughout.

These same factors are true with curling irons also. The stove heated curling irons are more conductive for professional use than the electric irons are, regardless of the ethnicity of the user.

The qualities of stove heated curling irons are not all the same. The cheaper ones are made from non-tempered steel or scrap iron that was melted together and moulded to resemble the higher quality irons. Higher quality curling irons are also assembled much better in order to last longer so that they do not fall apart during use or after prolonged use. For example, the higher quality irons start with blue steel that can be tempered to hold heat longer and evenly from one end to the other. In actuality stove heated irons are not typical curling irons. Instead they are Marcel Irons. There is a vast difference between the two.

The difference in design and functionality of a curling iron and a Marcel iron is simple. A curling iron is manipulated by controlling the shell of the iron that comes in contact with the rod with the thumb. A Marcel iron (named after its French inventor over hundred years ago) has two revolving handles of equal length – one to control the shell and the other to control the rod.

The Marcel iron is considered to be much more professional than the curling iron. When working with a curling iron, the area of the hair shaft that  comes in contact with the shell and pin which in the close position will stay in constant contact with the hair until released by the thumb. This is because the shell is held in a permanently closed position by a spring, which is released by the thumb’s pressure. The only way this pressure can be released during the curling procedure is when the thumb controller comes back around into position to be released. In contrast, the rod and the shell of the Marcel iron can be kept in constant motion of opening and closing during the entire curling procedure, thereby disallowing hot spots to occur that could permanently and seriously damage the hair. Mastering the use of the Marcel iron is an art form that many cosmetologists have perfected and cannot be duplicated with an ordinary curling iron.

The cheaper irons are OK for occasional home use because they are not subject to the kind of wear that everyday use requires when used professionally. The best quality irons cost more, not because they are better known but because they are made out of high quality materials and have built-in features that comfort to professional demands required for daily use. Many products on the market cost more because they are highly advertised and enjoy greater name recognition and not because they are of higher quality than the cheaper products. However in the case of stove heated curling irons, the higher cost reflects the materials used as well as the state-of-the-art design and workmanship that is engineered into each unit.
